Do I have to explain further?

Owkheiz. This is my super dooper mega googolflex times two times two times two to the 99th power of the Almighty kili-kili of mine TESTIMONIAL of my supposedly most recent event I attended using my very own money FOR the first time at Trinoma (am I supposed to suffix ‘mall’ to it?) Yes, I had so many firsts on this event, I think attending it was one of the wisest decisions I ever had in my life, next to my career course change as a manga artist (what’ll happen to my job op in 24 Oras? Lol).

I might have forgotten some of the most important details of the tour. It’s been a while.

TO ATTEND OR NOT TO ATTEND

I wasn’t really serious about not sleeping for my decision-making if I should attend the Trinoma Blogger Food Tour or not, but pushing for it wasn’t that easy. For a poverty-ridden platypus like me, traveling from my remotely located Cavite State University to North EDSA, in fact, was a BIG hassle in my part because of the possible transpo and—ehem—extra-curricular expenses I might induce. You read it right. I travelled all the way from Indang, Cavite to Quezon City, right after my class in Advertising (which pissed me off because our prof was absent—goodbye 100 pesos!) My 2 kg laptop was there with me through thick (smoke and smog) and thin (budget). I already looked disastrous after reaching Pasay MRT station for like 4 and a half hours of worrying for my transpo. But I managed to withdraw a decent amount from my EON card. All in the name of free food.

I didn’t even sleep nor eat breakfast or lunch before the event. And I came all the way from my school. How’s that?

Not only that, I was also worrying for my Photo Journ project where we’re required to submit 5 different photos (one each type) so I thought the event would help me a lot. Talk about shamelessly taking photos of the passengers in the MRT coach I was riding. Hahaha.

I didn’t know exactly where Trinoma is. After landing on the tiled flooring of a certain “mall” in front of me, I thought I was somewhere else farther. So I asked one police officer about its whereabouts, only to humiliate myself that the floor I’m already standing on is Trinoma.

Stupid Spanish subheading above me. So I took my digicam out for some nice Kodak-ing (I have a Kodak digicam, efwayay) and my initial reaction was like—is this SM North Edsa? After a couple of steps towards the center of the mall, I saw a bunch of unrecognizable, expensive-sounding stores like from some Ayala conglomerate and… oh yeah, it’s Trinoma na nga talaga because I felt that perturbing ‘socialite ambience’.

So yeah, with my face covered with nothing but atmospheric Metro Manila dirt and excess oil, I strolled inside the mall to kill some time—two hours to be exact—even if I was as hungry as a bear that just came out of hibernation. I didn’t expect to come earlier because of the Black Nazarene feast and the atrocious traffic but yeah, it’s a miracle for me to come TWO HOURS EARLIER before the start of an event.

I went to the cinema lobby and saw nothing but students who skipped classes for Enteng Kabisote. Lol. I thought the venue wasn’t put up yet, though I saw a white enclosure 5 meters away from the cinema ticket booth. Thinking it was a different event because of the real estate tarpaulins all over the place (which I find intimidating), I decided to walk another round some more and then saw a pink Doc Tess-looking lady walking just beside the white enclosure. I also received an SMS from Shari and she thought I was with Kevin and the rest of the Metro Manila/Rizal gang, then replied that I was all alone with my heavy bag pack and a very hungry stomach. I roamed around the arcade center, got intimidated by some girls looking at my shirt as if my existence was a terrible mistake, watched a guy shoot hoops that broke records (see photo), and then decided to go back to the enclosure. Darn, a “Trinoma Blogger Food Tour” print out was finally Scotch-taped at the entrance to the white, real-estate ad spammed enclosure. There I found Karlo, JM, and Calvin (if I spelled it correctly) upon registration.

It took only a few seconds before Doc Tess arrived and thus, the Early Blog Birds Association was founded. Hahaha.

A few minutes later, the rest of the youngest, uber good-looking bloggers of the Philippines (that’s US by the way) arrived with… what the eff… they have blue stickers on their shirts

I initially registered myself in the Yellow category… or Green AAACK (source: above pic)! I almost forgot! Damn my forgetful brain… so yeah, another group I was in. After recognizing that I was off the pack with the guys who have blue stickers on all their shirts, I decided to come along and asked the volunteers to allow me to change groups.

I already fed myself up before the actual tour because we were served with  chicken barbecue (that tasted deliciously like curried), pancit, puto and puto kucinta, and… and… lots of iced tea. In addition to that, the AVP of Trinoma was either very informative or entertainingly funny (I didn’t get the blueprint of how Trinoma appeared to be a triangle in bird’s eye view and the actors were just as worse as the Xmas holiday ads of GMA).

Unfortunately, the event didn’t start the way it should and the greatness of the male emcee’s voice didn’t help a bit. But the tour commenced anyway as we submitted ourselves to a Trinoma employee slash tour guide named to someone I can easily forget about for some reason. My enthusiasm was at its peak because we’re finally gonna eat FOOD! Finger food, warned the Trinoma tour emcees.

PAGKAIN! PAGKAIN! PAGKAIN!

Yeah right. I wasn’t that reserved on the commencement of the most awaited food tour. I WAS THERE FOR FREE FOOD TO BEGIN WITH (socializing with some Multipliers came in second, by the way. Lol). Nervous and equally excited, the tour guide left us for good. So yeah, we had to introduce ourselves to the restos who have "confirmed" participation in the tour. Golly, they were so MANY of them in our mini list, I had no idea how the hell I can fit every bite size of their free food inside my stomach.

And to our greatest surprise, the very first resto we came across cogged the series of unfortunate events. Madison Grill, though looking at their best upon our entrance, was all dazed and frantic when we started taking pics of their interiors. Well, that hinted me that there’s something wrong with the tour.

Imagine a guy wearing his 80-pesos-worth eyeglasses gormandizing his all-time favorite Sinigang na Baboy in front of his laptop resting on a small glass center table. I guess you kinda wondering (and suspiciously eavesdropping) if he’s watching something [decent, you pervert ].

Okay. A Korean boyband in a talent variety show. All good-looking and f*cking talented. That’s–err–nice. So?

Then suddenly, you hear quick sniffing coughs that sound like asthma. A few minutes later you see him forcefully blurts out some 60 something grains of rice and other chewables on his laptop screen and shouts ‘SHYET!‘ extremely loud on a 14 year old girl belting out “And I’m Telling You I’m not Going”

It was only a week ago when I discovered the news about a certain young Pinay who ‘wowed’ South Korean superstars in a variety show. I was hesitant at first about it–for a lot of reasons. One, we’re only known in Korea for their own convenience of cheap English proficiency education in the Philippines and two, as far as the entertainment industry is concerned, we’re just practically ‘unknown’ there since the Korean entertainment industry focuses more international market to China, Japan, Singapore, and Thailand. Then I landed on Maruja’s blog post and stumbled on a rather familiar name: Charice Pempengco.

Charice Pempengco with her liveliest LIVE rendition yet of “And I am Telling You I’m Not Going” by Jennifer Hudson. Don’t tell me you’re not going to be amazed by this performance.

I just couldn’t believe how the Korean audience, including the members of Super Junior (a very popular Korean boyband)in that show (Star King) was astonished by Charice’s very powerful singing. I mean, standing ovation in her NO NO NO NO WAYYYYY WHOAAA!!!!?

For those who don’t understand what they’re trying to exist on the vid, they were just SOOO amazed on how a young 14-year-old (Korean age: 15) lady–I mean ‘young lady’ would sing something like that of a 30 year old with so much power and flawlessness.(If you want, you can just jump to the videos below and stop reading this but of course you’ll die if you do that without reading the rest of the article. Lolzies )

Even I was dumbfounded at their reaction–their overwhelming reaction, like it’s the first time of their lives that they saw a young kid belting out songs of 20 to 30-year-old divas. Here in the Philippines, almost every municipality has an amateur singing contest held occasionally, and for us fiesta-loving Filipinos, it’s quite not unusual to see youngsters ranging from 6 to 10 years of age performing the highest notes of Whitney Houston or Regine Velasquez’ singles.

There, they all stood up, waving their hands (as though getting some fresh air), clapping, and repeatedly whoah-ing.

I was wowed by Charice’s performance as well. Plus my mom and my brothers. Kulang na lang, dad ko. I rarely see renditions of this song to be performed wonderfully and, oh may gulay–LIVE. o_O!!! [insert more Korean smilies here]

However, I am suddenly saddened by the stature of our perception–perhaps our industry’s standards–to what make makes a person a star. To think that that mature, controlled but effortlessly powerful voice coming from a young teenage Filipina is already worthy of a big round of applause in my very own room, the overflowing number of young talents here in the country would seem to obscure her and and have other aspirants to capture the brighter limelight of stardom. And going outside this room overpopulated with talented individuals and seek for a room with–well, not exactly untalented–will make him/her noticeable.

Just like what Charice Pempengco did in Star King, which I think is good.

Why good? Okay, take this as a good examply.

Would you believe that this real ‘rising internet star’ Charice was only a runner-up on Little Big Star, following Sam Concepcion (that handsome, total package, wonder boy who dances like Gary Valenciano but sings like Britney Spears. Lol) on the ‘honor roll’? For first time viewers, I know you wouldn’t believe hearing it from Charice saying she’s just a finalist. But with that kind of talent, those Koreans already knew that this so-called ‘runner-up finalist’ in one of the biggest TV networks in the Philippines already has a bright, bright future ahead of her.

Just imagine a big-time entertainment outfit SM (not the ShoeMart, of course) asking her to sign as a major talent right after the taping of that show. And she even had the ‘closest encounters’ with one of the most popular superstars in Korea which any die-hard SuJu fan would envy.

Like…

Being personally given with a bottle of Evian water from a SuJu member (with a foreground of the host’s imitation of her R&B belting) and…

And she even danced with the the rest of them! She was like, oh, a diva that can sing pop can even do the Harlem. Totally outrageous. I mean, she too was joking around, having some funny stints with the jurors of that show, and in the end hugged not one, but TWO SuJu members within a short period of time. (Aside from the behind the camera scenes, Charice has been a lucky, lucky girl.)Another thing… after the dancing part, she even had a duet with Kyu-Hyeon, singing “A Whole New World”, which really gave my skin the highest goosebumps from a variety show. Kulang na lang, sumigaw ako ng ‘Go Philippines!’ [haha, there goes the Tagalog part]

Not to mention that some of the members were like crying a river during their performance. Isn’t that awesome?

Because of that, I’ve been playing the video for like a hundred times already and unbelievably, I still can’t get enough of it. I’m getting more and more amazed each and every time I witness how a 14-year-old Charice wowed Koreans and netizens alike.

What do you want? Talent? Charice can give you REAL TALENT!

Just look at her YouTube vids, as well as all the articles posted on the Internet about her and her performance. Or if you can read (and type) Hangeul, try daum.net or kr.yahoo.com. Some of the silliest comments I can read were like her lip-synching and that she’s not really 14 years old but 5 years older. Oh c’mon, isn’t that obvious that they were just toppled by a young Asian kid from some ‘high’ school in the Philippines.

Now, she’s even featured TWICE on E!’s Daily Top Ten this week. It’s so amazing. Finally, someone from the mass media officially confirmed that she is NOT lip-synching.

(Ergh, I guess stupid people would delude themselves that she’s fake. Duh?)

Ultimately, with all the wits and charm, and an electrifying talent demonstrated, Charice has annexed a global bridge between the Philippines’ finest young talents to the rest of the world.

It’s a big dilemma in our part when we are tasked to make a film in school, knowing that us Journalism majors are not provided with enough facilities and equipment to utilize in the field of moviemaking. Talk about journ majors producing a feature film instead of docus or news vids

The first time we did a short flick was two years ago, when our annoying Intro to Film instructor ordered all second year Journ studes (that’s 25 of us) to compete with the junior Journ studes in a Film fest. For our instructor’s convenience, she assigned her Film Criticism class to, well, criticize our works, do the verdict, and declare the winner, which obviously was not anyone in the fest for the record while our instructor got home with our money supposedly for the fest proper. (Our plans of getting a refund didn’t even start).

Our first film, Istiryotayp, was all about the, as the name implies, stereotypical struggles of a Romeo and Juliet based couple. You know, langit siya lupa ako conflict. And because of our director’s insistence, a ‘brokeback’ couple was added to give the movie a little bit of, as the title implies, stereotypical third party twist (the struggling homosexual third party becomes blander and blander nowadays because of our mainstream moviemakers). I portrayed a stereotypical father named Don Zulueta who “owns everything but loved by none”, and then handled everything on the post-production. At that time we were so lucky to have an uber wealthy classmate who, not only that he has a son the same age as ours to mingle with, and a fortune to squander, but also allowed us to use his very stylish house that was used in “Maging Sino Ka Man” series.

His crib was so damn beautiful, we nearly had our clothes packed up for the mass migration. Magpapaampon na kami. Too bad, they’re selling the house for P17M in order to build a bigger, more stylish crib in Amadeo, Cavite.

It was a fearless attempt, though, considering the fact that we have never ever tried making a film before. Even our instructor who bragged about her part-time work with our late Pinoy movie supremo Lino Brocka few ages ago, didn’t even care about teaching us the basics of film making. Like how to utilize the light, the cam, and everything film gibberish. Thus, every scrap we consolidated into a 1-hour short film (hahaha) became our priceless gem for our block which we regularly watch each time we get together.

However, upon the start of our second semester a year after, our Laws of Mass Media instructor suddenly twisted his mind and ordered us to make a short flick about the life of a journalist. Take note: he insisted that the journalist we’re gonna use as subject for our film has already faced a case in court and had a court ruling already accessible publicly. Luckily, Ms. Ellen Tordesillas was so kind to accommodate us in just a short notice and had her interviewed (at the time when they filed a class suit against First Gentleman Mike Arroyo). She even gave us a free treat at Pizza Hut and introduced us to Ms. Sol Vanzi, a former ABC reporter. There had been a lot of sharing about the Philippine mass media while enjoying her delectable seafood fettuccini and her beef ravioli. So lucky to have Ma’am Tordesillas. I have already posted this film in my previous blog.

And now, with a few months nearing to tenteneen teteteneen, our new Film Criticism instructor gave us another task for our final examination—produce a short film and then thoroughly criticize it scholastically.

Well, here it is. Our third (and probably, unless someone tells us to do another one, our last) attempt for a (decent) film, entitled “S.M.S”.

S.M.S – Sampalataya – Mata – Suwail (Full Version)Acronym for “Sampalataya” (Worship), “Mata” (Eye), and “Suwail” (Insolent), S.M.S is a wish-wash of some of the most forwarded stories via text messages. The movie actually starts with the introduction of “Suwail” characters while the scenarios “Sampalataya” and “Mata” are the text messages read by Andrei, the cellphone guy.The movie’s plot isn’t that complicated. A guy reads tragic text messages without knowing that his own story is a tragic text story by itself. It’s actually a simple film that concentrates on family values and, incidentally, faith– where the main characters always realize a grave fact in the end. If we proceeded with all the text messages, it might have been a 2-hour feature film.

SENSELESS FACTS:

1. Formerly dubbed ‘Project: Text Quotes’, S.M.S is a trilogy of tragic stories forwarded via SMS. Due to the loss of some of our colleagues’ cellphones and erasure of their inboxes, we tried to search these quotes on the internet.
2. In the original setup, the film rooted for nine stories, all with their scenario titles: the insolent son (“susi”), the atheist couple (“akap”), the ugly daughter (“manyika”), the car-scratching kid (“daliri”), the secretary child (“gatas”), the shortcut hesitation (“shortcut”), the one-eyed mother (“inay”), and the I-Love-You teddy bear (“bear”). However, due to [[insert cramming alibis, time mismanagement, and over-piled projects and activities in school here]], we managed to accomplish only 3.
3. Our shooting dates were barbaric. We always had conflicting schedules and late-comers. IT took us 5 separate working days to shoot.
4. We ran out of hospitals and clinics to use as our location so we decided to use our university slash Korean hostel for the hospital scenes.
5. We normally ran out of available light. Thank God Brightness and Contrast and Color Corrector is here.
6. We had a twin portraying Thei in the Sampalataya scenario. The other twin wasn’t supposed to act, but on our last shooting day, Johanster just had his tantrums. We asked his twin, Johannes, to replace him. Both of them had a hard time pronouncing the word “yumakap”. So we changed it to “yumapos”, which we found unintelligible after the editing.
7. I edited the movie for 30 f*ckin’ straight hours. Not because I find the editing difficult, but I tried to experiment on every conjoining of the sequences. Since Adobe Premiere CS3 is so f*ckin’ gluttonous in memory, I used an equally powerful, yet efficiently fast Sony Vegas 8. Yes, this nifty Vegas would even work seamlessly on a Pentium III-powered desktop.
8. Unfortunately, yours truly had a short stint in the film. I was initially placed on the ungrateful son of the one-eyed mom character (whose left eye looked like it just had a cosmetic vaginal surgery). But because I looked more like a father than a teenage jerk, they swished 5 tablespoons of egg white all over my face. Voila, la transformation magnifique—grande-pere a l’oeuf. (But does the doctor actor looks more adult than me? What do you think? )
9. I just love Zelle’s “Sabihin”. I love dark, angsty yet depressive songs like this. Wanna have a list? Because of You by Kelly Clarkson, My Immortal by Evanescence, My Chemical Romance’s “I don’t Love You” and the like. Therefore, I placed it on the credits portion.
10. My laptop has been all around our pre and post production—a log book of minutes of our meetings, a portable on-location monitor, a word processor, and a video editing workstation. Bugbog na bugbog ang laptop ko since every shooting and editing my thesis group, at the same time, use this laptop for our manuscript and all. Not to mention that I was also the Editor in Chief of our tabloid project, as well as taking the responsibility of a multi-purpose news reporter, layout/graphic artist and cartoonist of the paper. And never I had eyebags. I’m so thankful for Eat Bulaga for giving me a durable, hardworking notebook (teary-eyes)

Ever since I found her YouTube vid performing live at a Korean talent show, my eyes was just stuck on every video I can find on YouTube with her on the limelight. In an instant, after wow-ing all the Koreans on her belting prowess on SBS Star King, I instantly became a fan and featured her on one of my blog posts.

Finally, after 48 years of her trying to get an American VISA at the soonest time possible (which was so soon enough, I’m kinda shaking my head for the ultra fast processing, damn you lagay/palakasan system), here she is… jumping with so much enthusiasm on Ellen.

Though she really exerted so much effort to look confident, I noticed that she’s really really nervous while Ellen asked her questions. I didn’t even understand what she first said to Ellen… nice person, nice buildings–everything looked nice and all. Lol. But of course it’s utmost acceptable. I would even lose my sanity when facing an international personality in front of the American audience (like stuttering on my impromptu news reporting on Eat Bulaga) and voice out the same thing (and forget everyone who helped me all throughout.) Anyway, Ellen was also star-struck to see Charice Pempengco in front of her, she’s like excited to hand Charice the mic for her to sing the Dream Girls anthem…

Everyone was anticipating. Including me on my very first time to watch this vid.

She belted a different version of Jennifer Holliday’s “And I am Telling You I’m not Going”. And oh, check out how the cameraman and the lights people struggled on her walking to and fro the stage (creating unnecessary shadows from the cameras). Even the clapper (in white) on the right side of the audience seats was caught off guard by the camera (hahaha).

You never failed to amaze me. I almost ran out of Mighty Bond to glue my jaw back to my skull every time you wave that Filipino flag in the international scene with all your mighty vocal prowess and all.

Again, Mabuhay ka Charice Pempengco! You made us all effin’ proud for giving Ellen “… one of the most incredible performances…” she has ever seen. I mean, standing ovation? C’mon! Charice deserves better than that!

And your mom? Awe… Just like me after winning a hundred thousand bucks from Eat Bulaga, she could have never been more prouder what with the standing ovation. Kudos, Charice!

ANOTHER UPDATE AGAIN: I’m kinda having doubts about that little birdie told me Charice Pempengco will AGAIN perform on the Ellen DeGeneres show this Friday. Another bird, a BIG one, told me she’s won’t. Perhaps not this week. She has to return to the Philippines and then fly back to Korea. Guess what she’s gonna sing, and I am telling you I’m not going anywhere just to find out what and why she’s gonna sing that. Oh come what may. Eh—did I just give you another clue?

I can actually see how my post looks like when it’s already published on my site. The font type/size/style… the background image… just PERFECT! Minus your sidebar and stuff (as far as my blog settings are concerned). I feel like I will love blogging via Windows Live Writer than my regular WordPress Write page.

It was a tough era for every highschool graduate (like what I was) to choose the course one has to take in college (except for those who wanted to get rich quickly, like ALL our nursing students today–lol). There went our teachers’ advices to consult our guidance counselors (there were only two and only functional during pre-graduation rites) to take those I-forgot-the-name-of-the-acronymed-exams-thnx to see what type of career I might see myself enjoying in the future. But it only made the situation worse. Adding more insult to the injury, I almost got every type of career available, from (unbelievably) Biology/Physics (yeah right, I excelled in my Science classes) to Engineering (hate Math. Period) to Performing Arts (yeah right, like singing Korean songs to voice acting like God in a major play prod) to Visual Arts (read: PCU-Dasma 2004 Artist of the Year). My salutatory speech disclosed to everyone that I wasn’t serious about not taking such decision-making for my college life seriously and tried to help them out for a laugh by inserting those Dream-Believe-Survive punchlines of StarStruck just to gobble up our valedictorian’s speech completely.

It was a tormenting minute when I finally had my hands on my admission exam at Cavite State University (I wasn’t allowed to enroll at UP) to fill-up the ‘Course’ item on the paper. I was done with the (easy) questionnaire (only had a bunch of high school algebra, some grammar/vocabulary exercises, nose-bleeding physics/chemistry choices and logic, which I’m poor at). And then it didn’t ever occur to me to reach this year to distribute survey questionnaires to students for our thesis about Internet freedom of expression.

I had no idea about my Journalism course I’m taking. That is, if I was really taking a Mass Communication course majoring lots of computer programming and systems management subjects.

For years, I was asked to write stuff… lots of stuff that I never did in my high school years. Stuff like expressing myself using words I got from the books I read from day one to forever, and then self-correcting them when I got the chance. Stuff like reporting news about the piso-per-piss comfort rooms on two way radio. Stuff like doing news translations and more news translations and more news translations, then finally engaging us to create investigative reports–both written and audiovisual. My broadcasting stints and film making were enjoying though but anything else about getting information from police officers and civilians and politicians and more politicians and civilians… both exhausting, as well as boring.

Everything that I’ve been doing journalism-related were unenthusiastic. When our professor Jun del Rosario asked me to do an on-the-spot live news reporting in school, my head nearly burst for anything to be coherently composed. I’m bad at story-telling, as well as explaining myself or something in public. Recall my hosting, Eat Bulaga stint, more hosting and all? I enjoyed the limelight for a while, but writing or speaking proficiently in English or Filipino, or even French or Korean doesn’t mean you have all what it takes to be a good communicator.

I think I’m a bad one who’s trying too hard to hone it, earned from it, grow with it, but didn’t enjoy much.

When people tried to praise me, most of the time I just didn’t mind that they said or written a thing about it, though I still continue speaking or writing for the sake of, well, speaking and writing. Words like, oh Neil, your voice is like coming from a real news reporter, or Neil, try applying for a news anchor work at [insert TV network here] or, Neil, host another event here in school or, that guy speaking in front of us has a good voice(…)speaks very well–no wonder he’s taking up Mass Comm (–from the Taste Asia guy at the 1st MoA Blogfest). There were so much words that have been said, I think my head’s ready to fall off my neck for having it swollen too much.

Me a hypocrite not to appreciate such nice words? Well yes, I really love to hear these words from any person. Who doesn’t want to?

But now, I know myself more than anyone else. I’m praised for something I’m not really good at.

I’ve been talking to our professor about his disappointment on my lack of interest on his subject, telling me that I got great potentials on being a good news reporter. He even wanted to talk to my mom, convince me to, well, I think you get the picture. I followed his advices–listen to AM radio, watch news broadcasts both in English and Filipino, read lots of historical books, and write as much as I can (which is the reason why I started my Asiatic blog at Blogger.com). But slowly, it became a routine that I stopped after my first few weeks of putting my enthusiasm to it.

I first grew up as an amateur comic book artist. An anime otaku. An anime character modeler. A manga creator. A painter. An editorial cartoonist. A Photoshop geek. A video editor. Then became a writer. A news reporter. A short story writer. A host. A voice actor. A guest speaker for campus journalism. A blogger…

A while ago, a professor reminded me about Pia Guanio’s statement on TV about me checking out any open opportunities at 24 Oras after I graduate next year. Brings back the memories. But I simply replied to my professor that she might already forgot about me and that she might have only said that for showmanship. But who knows that I might become a broadcast journal—

Journalist? Nah. I just have to get back to designing clothes for some motorcycle company.

I was a bit surprised at first that this website would only cater on women’s clothes. But it isn’t.
